ABSTRACT:
The "Pompei - Insula del Centenario (IX 8) Project", carried out by Dipartimento di Archeologia (Università di Bologna), in collaboration with Soprintendenza archeologica di Pompei, VIS. I. T. Lab (CINECA, Bologna) and Boconsult - Ducati Sistemi, has experimented an innovative methodology for the development of Cultural Heritage Virtual Reality, involving both the construction and the fruition of a virtual archaeological environment.
The target of "Pompei - Insula del Centenario Project" is to get a philological virtual reconstructed model of the main axe of a large roman house in Pompeii, the Casa del Centenario (IX 8, 3.6.a), able to supply visitors with valuable information authenticated by archaeologists and documentary sources.
Through these features, the virtual 3D model of the Casa del Centenario in Pompeii fulfills the tasks of transparency of the reconstruction process and interactivity of the virtual environment, two of the main issues to make Virtual Archaeology a substantial contribution for scientific research and presentation of archaeological evidences in an enriched form.
